About Us
Welcome to the Manoa Dojo!
If you’ve ever taken a course by yourself (like I have), you know how hard it can be to learn all the material. Why
not join a network of like-minded ICS students? All you need is your UH login to signup!
For each course, there are two types of users: grasshoppers and senseis. Grasshoppers represent the typical student users – ones that require help in their classes. Senseis are the student mentors whom have already taken the course. Grasshoppers can request a study session, notifying all other grasshoppers and senseis in that subject. These grasshoppers and senseis may join the study session, creating a study group.
User Guide
Video Tutorial
To best understand how Manoa Dojo works, you watch the video above, follow the guided tour below, or both!
Landing Page
- Students and staff can log in using their UH email accounts. The about page in the top right hand corner has more information about Manoa Dojo's system.
After you login, you will be redirected to your user home page.
User Home Page
- User account homepage displays your upcoming study sections as well as sections you may be interested in.
- When you first login, it's empty. Let's go join a section! Click the red "Join" button to join a study session. This takes you to the Study Sections Page.
- You can also create your own sections from your homepage.
Study Sections Page
- The study section page shows all available study sections.
- This page shows additional information such as who created it, how many people are currently in it, and a description of the section.
- You can like study sessions. This will make them appear in your user home page and calendar.
- You can also join a section from this page, so points will be awarded when the section ends. You can only join a section when it is in session. This redirects you to the chat room.
Chat Room
- You can talk with other users here about your professor, upcoming test, and whatnot.
Let's go back and create our own study session.
Create Study Session
- Enter all the information about your upcoming study session, like the time, date, subject, and where to meet. If you've done it correctly, it should popup in your home page
Now, let's check out the calendar.
Calendar Page
- There should be two sections in your calendar: The section you've liked and the section you've created.
Let's take a look at the leaderboard
Leaderboard Page
This is a leaderboard of the users that have attended and created the most sections this month. When you complete a section, you get a point. Points get you on the leaderboard, and a higher colored belt!
The last main feature is the user profile page.
User Profile Page
- On your profile you can specify which subjects and classes you are a sensei in, and which subjects you are a grasshopper in.
- This page also gives you a place to say a little about yourself.
- You can visit other profile pages by changing the URL. For example, if I wanted to visit my friend, zhenfeng's profile, I would visit "http://manoa-dojo.meteorapp.com/profile/zhenfeng".
Initial User Study
We recruited five junior and senior level University of Hawaii students to test our application. Three of the five students have taken ICS courses, and the other two were engineering students. Each student was given a link to the project page, without any knowledge of the application. Their feedback was compiled and summarized into these main points:
- Users liked the intuitive, simple design of the website
- Users liked the scrolling chat bar
- Users liked the leaderboard, but could not understand the belt system
- Users found many small bugs in the system
Overall, users like the website's design, but were confused and did not understand how to use the website. Thus, we added additional textboxes and webpages to instruct the user from page to page. All of the bugs were fixed.
